The “Promotion of Cleaner Cooking Company”, a not for profit Malawian organization, was registered in March 2016.
The present team started in 2017 with the distribution of charcoal stoves in the in the urban. The distribution is carried out through a network of about 15 to 20 retailers in various towns have been identified. Retailers are located in the major agglomerations (Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu) and in a number of smaller towns like amongst others Mzimba, Nkhatabay, Salima, Balaka and Dedza.
These retailers get a net profit of 20 to 25 % while the company assists them in PR activities.
To develop the market we started at subsidized, low prizes. Our funds are coming from a private person in The Netherlands and thus we need to increase the price gradually until we reach the cost price. In view of the increasing charcoal price users earn their investment back in only a few months.
The scientific background of the director and founder of the company enables him to advice the government in all aspects related to optimization of the charcoal production. A recent study has shown that the combination of the use of the special designed charcoal stoves and (semi) industrial charcoal production will save 80 % of the wood presently being used in the charcoal production.
